Tartans Fall Short at Emory, 62-57

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled south to Atlanta, Georgia, for an University Athletic Association (UAA) contest with Emory University on Sunday, January 25, falling short 62-57. The Tartans are now 10-5 on the year and 2-3 in the UAA while the Eagles move to 10-6 and 2-3.

The Eagles held a 29-22 halftime lead after closing the period with an 11-0 run.

Sophomore Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean), who was limited to three minutes of action in the first half due to foul trouble, scored seven of the Tartans' first 10 points out of the locker room to bring the Cardinal and Gray to within four, 36-32, with 16:34 to go.

The Eagles then stretched their lead to 11 for the second time when Dumebi Egbuna scored inside with 12 minutes to play, making the score 45-34.

Four-and-a-half minutes later, freshman Zoe Zawisa (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) drained a three-pointer from the top of the key closing a 14-5 run by the Tartans to pull within two.

Emory was able to keep the lead down the stretch as the teams traded baskets. The Eagles also made 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the last thirty seconds.

The Tartans were led by junior Lindsay Poss's (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) 13 points and eight rebounds. Murphy finished the game with 10 points to keep her double-figure scoring streak alive for the season.

Carnegie Mellon will next face third-ranked Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, on Friday, January 30 at 6:00 p.m.
