School Record 12 Three-Pointers Not Enough in Tartans Match-Up with #7 Washington U.

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hosted seventh-ranked Washington University on Friday, February 6 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. The Tartans battled to a 71-61 loss, moving their record to 11-8 overall and 2-6 in the UAA. The Bears advance to 18-1 and 7-1.

Early three-point shooting was the story as Washington's Maddy Scheppers connected on four of her first five shots from behind the arc, giving the Bears a 14-9 lead 4:23 into the game.

Carnegie Mellon's Chandler Caufield (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) hit four of her own from long range in the first half but 14 second-chance points for the Bears gave the visitors a 43-24 halftime lead.

The Bears opened the second half with a 12-3 run, closing on a three-pointer by Scheppers, to hold their largest lead of the game at 28 points.

The Tartans then rattled off 11 straight, beginning with back-to-back treys from junior Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville), to cut the deficit to 17 points.

A 14-3 run over the final 4:51 pulled the Tartans to within 10 points to end the game.

Poss led the Tartans with 18 points, 14 coming in the second half. Caufield and sophomore Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) each tallied 12 points and junior Liza Otto (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) finished with 10. The team made 12 three-pointers for the game which is a season high and school record, while also shooting a season high 57.1% from distance.

Scheppers led the Bears with 21 points (all three-pointers) while Melissa Gilkey scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

The Tartans will next face the University of Chicago (13-6, 7-1) on Sunday, February 8 at 2:00 p.m. in Skibo Gymnasium.
