Tartans Open Season with 74-45 Win at La Roche

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team opened the season with a 74-45 win at La Roche College Tuesday, November 15 behind double-doubles by seniors Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) and Jackie Hudepohl (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook (Colgate)). The 18th-ranked Tartans won their sixth straight season opener.

Murphy and Hudepohl both tallied more than 20 points with Murphy dropping in 24 and Hudepohl 22 to start the season. Murphy grabbed 22 rebounds while Hudepohl finished with 10. As a team, the Tartans recorded 19 assists on 29 made field goals and shot 46.8% for the game.

The Tartans jumped out to a 16-6 first quarter lead behind 10 points from Hudepohl. After the Redhawks cut into the lead with four points out of the second quarter gate, Murphy hit the next six points for the Tartans and pushed the lead back to 10 at 22-12 with 4:09 to play before halftime.

Four points by Hudepohl, two free throws by freshman Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) and another layup by Murphy closed the half and the Tartans led 30-16 at the break.

The Tartans shot 51.5% in the second half and held the Redhawks to a .345 shooting percentage while causing 16 turnovers to close the game with a 29-point win.

Next on the schedule for the Tartans is Transylvania University who they'll face at the Wilmington College Tip-Off Tournament in Wilmington, Ohio, on Friday, November 18 at 8:00 p.m.
