Filiere Honored as ECAC Women’s Basketball South Rookie of the Week

(DANBURY, Conn.) – Carnegie Mellon University freshman Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) has been named the Corvias Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Basketball South Rookie of the Week for her efforts against Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, January 7.

Filiere scored a career-best 20 points while shooting 43.8 percent from the floor and 83.3 percent from the free throw line. She also had four rebounds and two assists in the game, which the Tartans lost, 87-78. It was her third straight double-digit scoring game and sixth of the season.

The Tartans (11-1, 0-1 University Athletic Association) return to action on Friday, January 13 at Brandeis University. Carnegie Mellon, who leads the nation in field-goal percentage (46.6%), will take on the conference leader in scoring defense (50.3 ppg.) and field-goal percentage defense (31.8%) in the Judges (9-3, 1-0 UAA). Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
