Women’s Basketball Tripped Up at #7 Rochester

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team played the seventh-ranked University of Rochester Yellowjackets on Sunday afternoon and fell 77-45 in Rochester, New York. The University Athletic Association (UAA) setback puts Carnegie Mellon's overall record at 9-5 and 1-2 in UAA play while
Rochester improves to 13-1, 3-0.

Rochester started the game on an 8-0 after converting three of its first four shots. The Lead expanded to 13-2 at the midway point of the first frame and the Yellowjackets led 24-10 heading into the second quarter. Carnegie Mellon was outscored 18-6 in the second frame and trailed 42-16 at the break.

In the third quarter, the Tartans shot 41.2% (7-17) from the floor and outscored Rochester 21-20 to leave the score at 62-37 heading into the last 10 minutes of play. Sophomore Katharine Higgins (Montclair, N.J.) led the Cardinal and Gray scoring eight of her 10 points in the third. Carnegie Mellon was outscored 15-8 in the fourth quarter with six of its points coming at the line.

Freshman Victoria Avery (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) scored 11 points to lead the Tartans. Higgins ended the game recording her sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Rochester was led by Alexandra Leslie with 12 points while Lena Ethington finished with 11 points and nine rebounds for the Yellowjackets.

The Tartans will return home on Friday, January 19 and will host No. 25 University of Chicago. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m. on the hardwood of Skibo Gymnasium.
