Tartans End Year with 71-55 Victory Against Case Western Reserve

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team closed the season with a 71-55 victory against Case Western Reserve University Saturday, February 23 at home to finish the year at 10-15. The University Athletic Association (UAA) win was the second of the season for the Tartans who return all 12 players next season.

Three players scored in double digits for the Tartans with sophomores Laurel Pereira (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and Megan Jaeb (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) each tallying career highs. Pereira led all scorers with 23 points and recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) dropped in 13 points with three triples to tie the school's season record for made three-pointers with 59.

The Tartans held an 18-14 lead after the first quarter which they pushed to 41-25 at halftime behind 13 points and five rebounds by Pereira. The sophomore guard opened the second quarter with back-to-back jumpers and later scored seven straight for the Tartans before assisting on a three-pointer by Jaeb that made the score 34-20 with 3:25 to play.

Case Western Reserve knocked seven points off the Tartans lead late in the third period to trail by nine but Filiere hit her second three-pointer of the quarter and pushed the lead back to double digits where it stayed for the remainder of the game.

Junior Jenn Mayberger (Chesterfield, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) finished with seven assists and four steals while freshman Kylie Huffman (California, Pa./Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic) recorded 11 rebounds off the bench for the Tartans. Case Western Reserve's Hillary Hellman led her squad with 22 points.
