Short Feature with Women's Basketball Junior Jenn Mayberger

Junior Jenn Mayberger, a business administration and decision science major from Chesterfield, Missouri, answers a few questions about student life at Carnegie Mellon, what she's excited for this semester, experiences she's had off the court, why she chose her major, and what she likes about Pittsburgh.

1. What do you enjoy about campus life?

I enjoy being able to hang out with friends and seeing people I know around campus. I like how many different activities there are to do on campus such as going to see a free movie in McConomy or seeing a show in CFA.

2. What do you get involved in outside of basketball?

I'm a Resident Assistant (RA) in Doherty Apartments and I push buggy for Student Dormitory Council (SDC). I'm also on Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).

3. Tell us about any internships you've had.

Last summer I studied abroad in Madrid, Spain. I stayed in a home stay with six other girls who were in my program. Our host mom, Maria, was amazing and shared so much about her life and her culture. She only spoke Spanish so it was a great experience to practice our language skills too. I took a class on international marketing, and I saw how marketing campaigns in Spain differ from those I had seen in the U.S. I traveled to Italy after my course, and then I traveled to Ireland and England with my brothers. Studying abroad was an amazing experience for me because I immersed myself in Spanish culture and learned a lot about day-to-day living in Madrid. I would highly recommend that if someone has the opportunity to study abroad in college, they should consider doing so.

After my freshmen year, I had an internship with a construction firm, Negwer Materials Inc., in St. Louis. I was a marketing intern for them, and I helped put together an analysis of their sales data as well as an internal health campaign. While I'm not interested in going into construction or marketing, I enjoyed getting a feel for daily work life and making connections with my coworkers.

4. What are you excited for this semester?

I'm excited for the weather to be a little nicer because spring is my favorite time on campus. Campus seems so much more active in the spring and everyone is outside hanging out when the weather is nice. I'm excited to push buggy during Spring Carnival. I'm also looking forward to getting to know my staff for next year because I'll be a Community Advisor (CA) in Stever House, and I get to work with nine awesome RAs.

5. What are your summer plans?

I'll be in New York City for a consulting internship with Riparian LLC. I'm so excited to get firsthand consulting experience and learn more about the field.

6. Why did you select your course of study – what class have you enjoyed the most?

I chose to study Business and Decision Science because I'm interested in analyzing why and how people make decisions in a business setting. One of my favorite classes has been Organizational Behavior because we did a project analyzing how a CMU club functions and made recommendations to improve the club.

7. What class has been recommended by your teammates (or past teammates) or friends as a MUST TAKE class at CMU?

A class recommended by past teammates is Roots of Rock & Roll. I'm hoping to take the course next semester.

8. What have you enjoyed about living in Pittsburgh?

I love the food in Pittsburgh. I've found so many good places to eat- Mineo's, Pamela's, Noodlehead, etc. My friend Makayla and I did a day in Pittsburgh last semester where we picked restaurants we wanted to try and then visited some classic Pittsburgh attractions such as the Point and Randyland. I also love how passionate people are about sports. I've gone to a Pirates game and a Penguins game, and I plan on going to a Steelers game before I graduate.
