Filiere and Weslock Earn Women’s Basketball All-UAA Recognition

Two Carnegie Mellon University women’s basketball players were honored by the University Athletic Association (UAA) coaches this week when the Association announced the 2018-19 All-UAA Women’s Basketball Team. Junior Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) and freshman Leah Weslock (Howell, Mich./Howell) were both named honorable mention following their performances throughout the year for the 12-13 Tartans.

Junior Laurel Pereira (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) tied the school record for made three-pointers in a game with seven, but her long range game couldn’t match that of the Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team and the Carnegie Mellon University Tartans fell 69-52 in the final game of the season. The score dropped the Tartans to 12-13 for the year and 3-11 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Spartans moved to 15-10 and 7-7.

Carnegie Mellon University junior Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) has been named to the CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District Women’s Basketball Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for the second time. As a sophomore last season, Filiere was the only second-year athlete honored out of six players on the District 4 team and one of six sophomores to be honored in Division III. This year, Filiere is one of five on the District 4 team and the only University Athletic Association (UAA) player across all districts to receive the award. To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve and maintain a GPA of 3.3 or better.

Four players scored in double figures and freshman Caitlyn Clendenin (Bethesda, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) recorded a double-double to lead the Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team to a 68-54 home win against the University of Rochester on Friday, February 15. The Tartans advance to 12-11 for the season and 3-9 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Yellowjackets drop to 9-14 and 3-9.

The Tartans stayed close early but were unable to keep up with the Maroons who closed out a double-digit game at 66-54. The Tartans are now 10-10 overall and 1-8 in league play while the Maroons move to 16-4 and 7-2.

The Spartans used runs in each quarter to thwart off the Tartans, as the home squad fell 74-63 to move to 9-3 overall and 0-1 in the UAA. The Spartans are now 8-3 and 1-0.
