Tartans Move to 3-0 with Third Double-Digit Win

(WOOSTER, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team improved to 3-0 with its third double-digit victory of the season when the Tartans defeated Franklin College at the Wooster College Classic, 74-60. Three players scored in double figures, as the team shot 49.2% from the floor for the second straight game.

The Tartans were selective with their shot attempts, scoring 28 points in the paint and hitting 7-of-14 three-pointers for the game. Junior Laurel Pereira (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville North) was 7-of-10 from the floor with a season-high 19 points, as freshman Caitlyn Clendenin (Bethesda, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) was 8-of-13 with 18 points and junior Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz. / Hamilton) scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Freshman Leah Weslock (Howell, Mich. / Howell) was the top rebounder for the Tartans with eight, while junior Megan Jaeb (San Jose, Calif. / Presentation) led the group with a career-high six assists off the bench.

A tight first quarter left the Tartans ahead 14-13. Midway through the second quarter the Tartans took a seven-point lead, 25-18, on a three-pointer by Weslock. A run by Franklin tied the match at 27-all before the Grizzlies briefly led 30-29 until Filiere made a jumper following a steal by Clendenin to put the Tartans ahead 31-30 at the half.

A timely triple by Pereira gave the Tartans a 51-41 lead late in the third quarter. That lead ballooned from there to 19 points when senior Gabby Yanai (Glendale, Calif. / Glendale) hit a three-pointer off a feed from Filiere with 8:29 to play. The Tartans kept the lead by double-digits the remainder of the game before the final 74-60 score.

The Tartans remain at Wooster for their second contest of the Classic when they play Finlandia University on Sunday, November 18 at 1:00 p.m.
