Pitts' Career Evening Leads Tartans to 76-51 Win Against Bethany

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hosted Bethany College for its first home game of the season on Tuesday, November 20, winning 76-51 over the Bison. The Tartans are now 5-0 for the season and hand Bethany its second loss at 3-2.

Junior Cameron Pitts (Frederick, Md. / Oakdal) had a career night in the win for the Tartans with 20 points and 16 rebounds in her first career start. Freshman Emily Archer (Chatham, N.J. / Oak Knoll) joined her with a career-high 16 points on eight made field goals while junior Laurel Pereira (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville North) scored 11 points. Freshman Leah Weslock (Howell, Mich. / Howell) grabbed nine rebounds for the third time this season, as senior Jenn Mayberger (Chesterfield, Mo. / Cor Jesu Academy) collected a season-best 10 assists.

The Tartans had eight assists on nine made buckets in the first quarter on their way to a 25-11 lead. Pitts scored the first two baskets of the game for the Tartans while Pereira knocked down two from behind the arc, scoring eight in the first 10 minutes. Archer had a smooth touch in the first period as well, connecting on 3-of-4 for six points.

Scoring slowed for the Tartans in the second quarter but they still held a double-digit lead, 36-20, at the break with Bethany shooting just .286.

Twenty-seven third quarter points for the Tartans ballooned a 16-point halftime lead to 29 going into the final period. Pitts had four points and four rebounds in the third quarter before scoring 11 in the final 10 minutes while grabbing another six boards.

The Tartans will next travel to Franciscan University after the holiday for a 2:00 p.m. game on Sunday, November 25.
