Filiere Scores 19 in Home Setback to Violets

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Junior Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz. / Hamilton) recorded a season-high 19 points against New York University on Sunday afternoon but the Tartans fell to the Violets, 72-64, at home. The Tartans are now 9-5 overall and 0-3 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Violets won their first UAA contest of the year and are 8-4 overall.

Filiere was the only Tartan to reach double figures on Sunday as the team shot 33.8% from the field for the game. Twelve of Filiere's points came in the second half when the Tartans pulled to within nine points with 59 seconds to play.

The Violets built a 22-point halftime lead by shooting 51.6% from the floor and draining 7-of-14 from behind the arc. Katie Foos had the hot hand for New York early, scoring 14 points in the first 20 minutes of action.

The Tartans forced the Violets into 26 turnovers and collected a season-high 18 steals for 27 points off turnovers but the double-digit deficit was too much to overcome.

Filiere and senior Jenn Mayberger (Chesterfield, Mo. / Cor Jesu Academy) each picked up five steals for the Tartans who lead the UAA in steals per game with 12.8.

The Tartans will next play on the road against the University of Rochester (6-8, 0-3) on Friday, January 18 at 6:00 p.m.
