Tartans Win Home Opener, 70-31, Against Franciscan

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball hosted its first game of the season and defeated Franciscan University 70-31 on Tuesday, November 23 in Wiegand Gymnasium. The Tartans improve to 3-2 for the year while the Barons are now 0-5.

Points off turnovers favored the Tartans, 7-2, in the first quarter as the Tartans took 22 shots to just nine for the Barons. Scoring was spread out between six players for the Tartans in the first quarter with freshman Isha Nambisan (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) leading with five while the Tartans led 18-5 at the first break.

By halftime, the Tartans built a 23-point lead with nine players on the scoresheet. Senior Caityln Clendenin (Bethesda, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) led the team with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor in the half. The Tartans shot 40.0% for the half while the Barons were stuck at 25.0% with just six made baskets.

The Tartans continued to take advantage of miscues by the Barons to finish the game with 27 points off turnovers.

Freshman Catherine Or (Los Angeles, Calif. / Marlborough School) led the team with 15 points and nine rebounds with Clendenin finishing with 12 points and three assists. Junior Divya Seenivasan (Bridgewater, N.J. / Rutgers Preparatory School) grabbed nine rebounds and scored eight points off the bench for the Tartans.

Carnegie Mellon will next play La Roche University on Thursday, December 2 at 6:00 p.m. in Wiegand Gymnasium.
