Tartans Drop Home Contest to Emory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hosted Emory University on Sunday, January 23 with the Eagles taking the road victory 73-60 via foul shooting in the last minute. The Tartans are now 9-5 and 3-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Eagles move to 10-4 and 4-1.

A back-and-forth first quarter favored Emory as the Eagles held a 15-10 lead at the first break. The visitors led by as many as seven points after Morgan Laudick hit the team's third three-pointer of the frame with 2:02 to go.

The Tartans shot 45.5% in the second quarter with five baskets, including their first three-pointer, and trailed the Eagles, 28-24, heading into halftime.

A 9-4 run to start the third period for the Tartans gave the hosts their first lead at 33-32 on freshman Anisha Chintala's (Austin, Texas / Westwood) first bucket of the game. Chintala scored six straight for the Tartans who led 37-36 with half the period left to play.

With the score tied at 41-all, the Eagles closed the half with a 7-2 run including a second-chance jumper by Claire Brock at the buzzer.

Senior Leah Weslock (Howell, Mich. / Howell) opened the fourth with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to two before Emory scored six straight to push the lead back to eight points.

Freshman Catherine Or (Los Angeles, Calif. / Marlborough School) picked Daniella Aronsky's pocket in the backcourt for her fifth steal of the game and made a fast break layup to make it a 66-60 lead for the Eagles with one minute to play.

Free throw shooting by Brock, who was 7-of-8 in the last minute, closed the game for the Eagles victory.

Senior Caitlyn Clendenin (Bethesda, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) led the Tartans with 15 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year. Or finished with 13 points while Weslock tallied 11. Or also picked up a career-best six steals and dished out five assists.

Emory was led by Anna Arato's 17 points as Brock finished with 16 points.

Carnegie Mellon will next play host to Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, January 28 at 7:30 p.m.
