Tartans Close Home Slate with Loss to #9 NYU

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hosted ninth-ranked and University Athletic Association (UAA) leader New York University on Sunday, February, 13. The Violets worked through a low percentage shooting effort to win 70-56 as the Tartans celebrated Senior Day. The Tartans are now 10-10 overall with three games left on the schedule.

Freshman Catherine Or (Los Angeles, Calif. / Marlborough School) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with team highs of 13 points and 14 rebounds. Or's 14 rebounds is a career best. Freshman Anisha Chintala (Austin, Texas / Westwood) chipped in 12 points while freshman Isha Nambisan (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) and seniors Caitlyn Clendenin (Bethesda, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) and Leah Weslock (Howell, Mich. / Howell) each scored nine points.

The Violets were led by sophomore Jordan Janowski's career-best 22 points and Belle Pellecchia's 13 points.

It was just the second time this season the Violets shot below 40% as they made 37.1% of their shots from the floor with the Tartans shooting a season-low 30.0% while tying the season-low of 21 made field goals.

Weslock led off her final home game as a Tartan with two straight buckets to put the Tartans up 5-2 in the first minute-and-a-half of the game. Later in the period, Chintala converted a layup after a defensive rebound by Clendenin and off an assist by Or to tie it a 11-11 before the Violets scored the final six points of the quarter to lead 17-11.

The Tartans had a four-plus minute scoring drought in the second quarter which led to the Violets extending their lead to 29-13 before the visitors held a 37-23 lead at the break.

NYU was able to maintain their advantage through the next two periods with the Tartans only getting as close as eight on two occasions.

The Tartans will close out the regular season on the road beginning with a 7:30 p.m. game at the University of Rochester on Friday, February 18.
