Tartans Fall by One in UAA Opener at Case Western Reserve

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball opened the University Athletic Association (UAA) schedule at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, January 7. The Spartans rallied in the fourth quarter to earn the home win by a one-point margin, 66-65. The Tartans are now 9-3 and 0-1 while the Spartans are 10-2 and 1-0.

How it Happened

  • The Tartans had a halftime lead of 14 points.
  • Case Western outscored the Tartans by 15 points in the second half, first taking the lead with 1:12 to play at 63-61.
  • The Tartans led 55-44 at the end of the third quarter but didn't score their first point of the fourth until sophomore Catherine Or made a layup with 5:43 to go to make it 57-51.
  • With the score tied at 63 and 17 seconds to play, the Spartans made one of two free throws to take the lead.
  • A layup by Or fell short with 10 seconds to go and Isabella Mills hit two free throws for the Spartans to make it a three-point game.
  • The inbounds play drawn up for the Tartans' top three-point shooter, sophomore Isha Nambisan, resulted in a rebound and sophomore Anisha Chintala could only put up a mid-range shot for the final bucket.

For the Tartans

  • Or led the Tartans with 18 points and 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
  • Chintala scored 14 points while freshman Savannah Gibbs scored 12 in her UAA debut.
  • Chintala also led all players with five steals.

For the Spartans

  • Mills led with 19 points.
  • Sarah Mitchell scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Notes

  • The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Tartans against Case Western Reserve.
