Trio of Tartans Named to All-UAA Squad

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's golf team had three athletes honored by the University Athletic Association's (UAA) coaches on the All-UAA team when the awards were announced late last week. Freshman Charlotte Simpson (Towson, Md./Bryn Mawr School) headlined the squad for the Tartans as a first team selection. Senior Summer Kitahara (Greenwich, Conn./Rye Country Day) and sophomore Yedin Lui (Idaho Falls, Idaho) both found a spot on the second team.

This marks the third straight season Kitahara has been honored by the league coaches and second for Lui. Kitahara was named first team a year ago while Lui was on the second team.

The three helped the 10th-ranked Tartans to the highest national ranking in school history. The Cardinal and Gray recorded three team victories this season, and started the fall season with a second-place team showing at the NCAA Division III Preview.

The trio also played a factor in the team setting three school records this past season. The first came at the Generals Invitational hosted by Washington & Lee University in October when the team carded a two-round score of 628. The Tartans then started spring play at the UAA Championships and broke the single-round team score on day two after carding a 303. The third record came less than a week following the UAA Championships at the Jekyll Island Collegiate. The Tartans set the lowest three-round score with a 948.

Simpson finished the regular season leading the team with a scoring average of 78.1 in 18 rounds of play. The freshman claimed top medalist honors twice with the first coming at the Allegheny Fall Invitational and the second at the Saint Vincent Spring Invitational. Her score of 149 at Allegheny, set the school record for the best 36-hole score. Simpson's lowest round of the season, two-over par 74, came on two occasions. The first at Allegheny and the second in the second round of the UAA Championships.

Kitahara finished the year with a scoring average of 80.8 through 18 rounds and ranked third on the team. She recorded two top-three finishes and seven top-ten finishes this season. At Allegheny and the UAA Championships, Kitahara carded rounds of 75 for a season-best round. The senior finished second individually for the UAA Championships with a 36-hole score of 154.

Lui finished second on the team in scoring average for the second straight season. The sophomore averaged 80.7 in 18 rounds of play. She recorded one top-three finish and four top-ten finishes. Lui recorded a career-best round of 75 at the Generals Invitational and Jekyll Island Collegiate.
