Simpson Named WGCA All-East Region

(HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla.) – Freshman Charlotte Simpson (Towson, Md./Bryn Mawr School) of the Carnegie Mellon University women's golf team was named to the All-East Region team when the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) recently released its 2018 Division III Awards. The announcement came at the WGCA Division III Awards Banquet held at the National Championship in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida, where Simpson helped the Tartans to a fifth-place national finish.

Simpson, who recently was name to the University Athletic Association's (UAA) first team, tied for 18th individually at the NCAA Division III Championship with a four round score of 320 (73-81-84-82).

Simpson finished the season leading the team with a scoring average of 78.5 in 22 rounds of play. The freshman claimed top medalist honors twice with the first coming at the Allegheny Fall Invitational and the second at the Saint Vincent Spring Invitational. Her score of 149 at Allegheny, set the school record for the best 36-hole score. Simpson's lowest round of the season, even par 73, came in the opening round of the NCAA Championships. Her score of 73 was the second lowest score recorded throughout the four rounds of play.

Simpson also played a factor in the team setting three school records this past season. The first came at the Generals Invitational hosted by Washington & Lee University in October when the team carded a two-round score of 628. The Tartans then started spring play at the UAA Championships and broke the single-round team score on day two after carding a 303. The third record came less than a week following the UAA Championships at the Jekyll Island Collegiate. The Tartans set the lowest three-round score with a 948.
