Women’s Golf Receives Academic Accolades for 2018-19 Season

The 2018-19 Carnegie Mellon University women's golf team received academic recognition from the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) on Wednesday when the association announced the top 25 teams with the highest team GPA for each division. The Tartans ranked 20th among NCAA Division III institutions. The 11-member Cardinal and Gray team finished the year with a cumulative grade point average of 3.603.

For the second consecutive year, four members of the Carnegie Mellon University women's golf team have been named to the 2018-19 Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar Team, as announced by the organization. Senior Carly Jordan (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal School), junior Yedin Lui (Idaho Falls, Idaho) and sophomore Charlotte Simpson (Towson, Md./Bryn Mawr School) are repeat honorees with freshman Nadia Susanto (Irvine, Calif./Arnold O. Beckman) joining the trio.

Four Carnegie Mellon University athletes were honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as Google Cloud At-Large Academic All-District selections. Senior women’s golfer Carly Jordan (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret’s Episcopal School) and junior swimmer Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) were selected to the women’s team while senior diver Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) and sophomore swimmer Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) were selected to the men’s team.

Freshman Nadia Susanto (Irvine, Calif./Arnold O. Beckman) of the Carnegie Mellon University women’s golf team was named to the All-East Region team when the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) recently released its 2019 Division III Awards. The announcement came at the WGCA Division III Awards Banquet held at the National Championship in Houston, Texas.

Freshman Grace Chen (Sunnyvale, Calif./Saint Francis) of the Carnegie Mellon University women's golf team was named University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Golf Rookie of the Year when the UAA announced its league awards on Tuesday. Chen was also named to the first team and is joined on the top squad by classmate Nadia Susanto (Irvine, Calif./Arnold O. Beckman). Junior Yedin Lui (Idaho Falls, Idaho) along with sophomore Charlotte Simpson (Towson, Md./Bryn Mawr School) both found a spot on the second team.

The Carnegie Mellon University women's golf team finished play at the Birmingham Southern College Southern Shootout on Tuesday with a 36-hole score of 624 (315-309) to place third in a field of 10 teams. The event was played at the Bent Brook Golf Course in Bessemer, Alabama, a par 72, 5,802-yard course. The team score of 624 is the third-best 36-hole tournament score in program history.

The Carnegie Mellon University women's golf team won the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate at the Indian Mounds Golf Club in Jekyll Island, Georgia, on Sunday. The Tartans fired the low team score on Sunday of 303 to help secure the team victory with a 54-hole, three-round school record score of 912 (302-307-303). The three-day event is being played on the par-72, 5,801-yard Indian Mounds Golf Club on Jekyll Island with the field comprised of 21 Division III teams including eight ranked in the top 25 nationally.

Chen finished the 36-hole championship with the lowest two-round score in program history, as she entered the clubhouse with a 147 (73-74).

The Carnegie Mellon University women's golf team completed play at the 2018 Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational and finished second in a field of 18 teams after carding a 309 Tuesday afternoon. The Tartans ended the 54-hole hole event with a three-round school record score of 938 (319-310-309) which was played on the 5,804-yard, par 72 course at the Baytowne Golf Club in Sandestin, Florida.

The Tartans are currently in second in a field of 18 teams after jumping four spots in the team standings on Monday. The Baytowne Golf Club in Sandestin, Florida, is the site of play for the 54-hole event.
