Chen Leads Field after Opening Round of UAA Championships

(PALM COAST, Fla.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's golf team opened play at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Saturday with the 36-hole, two-day event being held at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida. The Tartans carded a team score of 321 on the par-72 Conservatory Course.

New York University leads the field following the first day of competition after entering the clubhouse with a 316 while Washington University in St. Louis is one-stroke ahead of the Tartans after carding a 320.

Freshman Grace Chen (Sunnyvale, Calif./Saint Francis) shot a collegiate-best round of one-over par 73 to lead the field at the championships. The freshman will enter play on Sunday with a five-stroke lead.

Sophomore Charlotte Simpson (Towson, Md./Bryn Mawr School) and freshman Nadia Susanto (Irvine, Calif./Arnold O. Beckman) both carded rounds of 81 while senior Carly Jordan (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal School) and junior Yedin Lui (Idaho Falls, Idaho) each ended play on Saturday with rounds of 86.

Carnegie Mellon had two individuals enter the championships, as junior Lavonca Davis (Pickerington, Ohio) shot an 83 and sophomore Catherine Tianhong Yu (Dalian, China/Walnut) carded an 84.

The final round will be played on Sunday at Hammock Beach beginning at 9:00 a.m. with the first tee time.
