Women’s Golf Lands #1 National Ranking

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's golf team earned the top position in the latest Division III national rankings by Golfstat when the list was released Wednesday. The number one ranking is the first for a women's team sport at Carnegie Mellon.

Carnegie Mellon competed in three tournaments during the fall season and recorded a team scoring average of 308.3 through seven rounds of competition. The Tartans opened the season with a second-place showing at the 13-team 2019 NCAA Division III Preview held at the PGA National Palmer Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The Cardinal and Gray then placed first at The Tartan Invitational in a field of 11 teams, eight of which were in the top 25. The event took place at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. A week later, the Tartans won the 18-team 2019 Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational played at Baytowne Golf Club at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Miramar Beach, Florida.

During play at the Golfweek Invite, the Tartans broke two team records carding an 18-hole team score of 296 in the middle round and a 54-hole total of 908.

The Tartans are led by freshman Alexis Sudjianto (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School), who averaged a 74.9 through seven rounds this fall and was crowned the individual medalist at the Golfweek Fall Invitational. The freshman set the school record with a 54-hole score of 217 and tied the 18-hole record with a one-under par 71 in rounds two and three of the event.

Junior Charlotte Simpson (Towson, Md./Bryn Mawr School) and sophomore Nadia Susanto (Irvine, Calif./Arnold O. Beckman) are second and third on the team in scoring average, after each playing in all seven rounds. Simpson averages a 76.3 and Susanto a 78.4.

Freshmen Michelle Cao (Johns Creek, Ga. / Northview) and Michelle Koo (Scottsdale, Ariz./BASIS Scottsdale Charter) also have contributed to the Tartans success this fall along with seniors Yedin Lui (Idaho Falls, Idaho), Lavonca Davis (Pickerington, Ohio) and Sanchi Gupta (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and sophomore Grace Chen (Sunnyvale, Calif./Saint Francis).

The Tartans will be off until the spring with their first competition at The Savannah Invitational March 9-10 in Savannah, Georgia, at the Savannah Quarters Golf Club.
