Tartans Outstanding in 4-0 Victory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Two second period goals by freshman Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) capped off an outstanding home performance by the Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team as it defeated Penn State Behrend 4-0 on Sunday, September 9 in the final game of the DoubleTree Tartan Cup. The Tartans improve to 2-0-2 on the season as the Lions drop to 0-4.

The Tartans opened the scoring in the 11th minute when senior Stephanie Hare (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster Schools) connected on a strike from 30 yards out. The goal was the first of the season for Hare and her first career goal. Her shot came after the Tartans missed on four other attempts.

Carnegie Mellon controlled the majority of the possession for the half and capitalized on a corner kick in the 37th minute. Sophomore Lucy Havens (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names Academy) placed the kick inside the six-yard box. The ball bounced through a host of players before sophomore Jordyn Greenberg (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) shot it past Behrend keeper at the far post.

Behrend nearly cut the deficit in half in the closing minutes of the first half when Tartan keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) pushed away a free kick by Julia Schroeck that was headed straight for the right corner.

In the 78th minute, Quiros scored her first career goal as she broke through a few tackles on the left side of the field and blasted a shot from 30 yards out that beat the keeper high and center.

The freshman than set up for a free kick a minute later and lasered it straight on and over the keeper for her second goal and the Tartan 4-0 lead.

Albi registered one save for the Tartans while junior Julie Rekant (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) played the second half and registered one save.

"This was a physical game for us and I am proud we were able to withstand it," head coach Yon Struble said. "Behrend is a great team who's been to the NCAA tournament and we got a good result today. Once again we were able to see a lot of our players which was fun for everyone. We had a great mentality throughout the day and played with a lot of passion."

The Tartans will be home on Tuesday, September 11 when they host Washington & Jefferson College at 7:00 p.m.
