Tartans Tie Nazareth 1-1 to Open Season

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team opened the 2012 season on the road against Nazareth College on Friday, August 31. The Tartans tied the home team 1-1 after 20 extra minutes of play.

The Tartans got forward early with three corner kicks in the first two minutes but were unable to register a shot.

The post saved the Tartans from falling behind 1-0 in the fourth minute as a second shot by the Golden Flyers was blocked in the 14th minute.

Junior Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley) had a shot saved in the 32nd minute before shots by junior Cecilia Zischkau (Washington, D.C./Oakcrest) and freshman Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) were off the mark towards the end of the half.

The Tartans continued with momentum in the second half registering three more shots before seven minutes ticked off the clock.

One minute after entering the game, freshman Amanda Broderick (Audubon, Pa./Metachton) scored her first career goal to put the Tartans ahead 1-0 in the 73rd minute. Broderick scored following a corner kick by Contopoulos.

Nazareth was able to equalize four minutes later when Ashtin Argentleri scored off an assist by Kaitlyn Sowyrda.

The Golden Eagles had two chances to take the lead in the 81st minute but junior goalkeeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) saved a shot with a second shot blocked by the defense.

Albi kept the game knotted at 1-1 with a save in the 87th minute, sending the match into overtime.

Only one shot was registered during the extra time as Albi saved a shot by Tyler Carr with two minutes to play.

"It was great to see the fight in this team," head coach Yon Struble said. "We've taken a step forward in mentality and everyone stepped up to make sure we didn't fall when we were under pressure at the end of the game."

"Amanda [Broderick] had a great goal coming right in and scoring on a volley and we got to play a lot of players and take a look at them in different positions," added Struble. "Nazareth was a good team and one we like to play against."

The Tartans will be in action again on Saturday, September 1 when they face Rochester Intstitute of Technology at 2:30 p.m. at Nazareth.
