Second Period Goals Lead Tartans to Victory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Three second period goals led the Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory on Saturday, September 15 at home versus Kenyon College. The Tartans remain undefeated with a 4-0-2 record while the Ladies fall to 2-4.

The teams played to a scoreless first period with the Tartans putting three shots on frame to the Ladies' two.

Junior Alex Venegas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) put the Tartans on the board early in the second period when she received a square pass from senior Stephanie Hare (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster Schools) turned on her defender just inside the 18-yard box and fired a shot past Kenyon's keeper in the 50th minute. The goal was Venegas's first of the season.

Junior keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) made two saves, keeping the Tartans ahead 1-0 before the Cardinal and Gray struck again in the 65th minute.

Junior outside back Brittany Couture (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) served a ball from the right sideline to the far post. Sophomore Lucy Havens (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names Academy) lept and met it with her head, beating Kenyon's keeper high for the second goal of the game and the home team's 2-0 lead. The goal was Havens's second of the year.

With just under three minutes to play the Tartans added to the score with a header goal by sophomore Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff). Sophomore Courtney Brant (Davie, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) served a corner kick to the near post where Reid moved through traffic in front of the net to head it home for her second goal of the season.

Albi combined with junior keeper Julie Rekant (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) for the shutout, the team's fourth of the season.

The Tartans will be back in action on Wednesday, September 19 at Allegheny College at 4:30 p.m.
