Tartans Strike Twice in Win at Chicago

(CHICAGO, Ill.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team traveled west to Chicago, Illinois, for a Saturday afternoon match against the University of Chicago and came home a 2-1 winner after two strikes by sophomore Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) in the second half. The Tartans improve to 7-1-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the University Athletic Association as the Maroons drop to 7-4 and 0-2.

The Tartans and Maroons played to a 0-0 tie after the first period as junior keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) made three saves for the Tartans and Jacinda Reid made two saves for the Maroons.

In the 57th minute, Reid received a through ball from freshman Louisa Pendergast (Snohomish, Wash./Glacier Peak) and chipped the keeper for the one-goal advantage.

Not quite two minutes later, Reid struck again with a header off a cross from junior Brittany Couture (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara). Reid's header and fourth goal of the season beat the keeper to the near post.

"Savina Reid had two beautiful goals on a breakaway and a cross which she finished on a header," head coach Yon Struble said. "She really stepped up her game today and it was fun to see."

In the 87th minute, Chicago cut the deficit with a goal by Natalia Jovanovic with a shot from the 18-yard box to the left corner.

"It was a great game, Chicago's a good team and it's tough to beat them at home," Struble said. "To Chicago's credit they didn't give up. Their goal late in the game was because of their great effort but we really dug in after that and finished off the game and left on a high note."

"This was such a great team effort for us," Struble added. "Everybody played hard and with a great mentality. The whole team stepped up and played some nice balls into the final third, worked hard collectively defensively and really earned a good win today."

The Tartans will next face University of Rochester at home on Friday, October 12 with the game set to begin at 5:00 p.m.
