#24 Tartans Win Third Straight UAA Game

The #24 Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team won its third straight contest in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday, October 14 when it defeated visiting Case Western Reserve University 3-1. The Tartans advance to 9-1-2 on the season and 3-1 in the UAA while the Spartans fall to 7-4-3 and 1-2-1 in the UAA.

The Tartans took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute on senior Brianna Magill's (Oak Brook, Ill./Downers Grove North) fourth goal of the season. Magill was the recipient of a diagonal pass back from the goalline by junior Alex Venegas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) and she blasted a low shot that was too strong for Case Western's keeper Megan Romelfanger. The play started with a long pass down the sideline by sophomore Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) before Venegas one-touched it back from Magill charging at the far post.

The Spartans equalized in the 21st minute after earning a free kick along the left sideline. Kate Dolansky sent the kick high and to the back post where Maeve Goede beat Tartan keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) to it for the header back across the box to the far net.

Five minutes later the Tartans were in the Spartans' final third again. Freshman Louisa Pendergast (Snohomish, Wash./Glacier Peak) played a ball from the center of the field to the left corner where Venegas ran it down and passed it low and across the box. Reid jumped over it at the far post, leaving it for Pendergast who put a low shot to the opposite post for the goal and the Tartans' 2-1 advantage.

The second period was played mostly in the middle third until the 69th minute when the Tartans struck again.

Sophomore Courtney Brant (Davie, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) put a throw-in to the middle of the 18-yard box where senior Stephanie Hare (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster Schools) flicked it on. Sophomore Lucy Havens (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names Academy) settled it and touched it off to junior Cecilia Zischkau (Washington, D.C./Oakcrest) who finished a shot to the inside of the far net.

The 3-1 score held as Albi earned her ninth victory of the season in net by making two saves for the match.

The Tartans will hit the road for a non-league contest on Thursday, October 18 to make up a postponed match with Grove City College. The kick is set to start at 4:00 p.m.
