Reid's Hat Trick Gives #21 Tartans Win on the Road

The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team traveled north to Grove City College for a non-conference match against the Wolverines on Thursday, October 18 for a rescheduled contest from September and came home with a 3-1 victory after a rainy afternoon. The #21 Tartans are now 10-1-2 on the year while the Wolverines are 11-3-1.

Sophomore Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) registered her second multi-goal game of the season and first career hat trick with two goals coming in the early part of the first half and one midway through the second.

Reid opened the scoring with a header goal 58 seconds into the game off an assist by junior Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley). Nine minutes later she struck again with junior Alex Venegas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) and senior Brianna Magill (Oak Brook, Ill./Downers Grove North) earning assists.

The Tartans nearly added a goal in the closing minutes of the first period when freshman Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) had a shot hit the crossbar.

Sophomore Courtney Brant (Davie, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) put a shot on goal in the 66th minute that was saved by Kristi Lathrop before Reid added a goal to the scoreline in the 67th minute off an assist by Venegas. The assist was Venegas' fourth of the season and marked the second straight game she registered two assists.

The Wolverines broke up the shutout by Carnegie Mellon keepers Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) and Julie Rekant (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) in the 78th minute when Shannon Bishop put a shot by Rekant.

The win gives the Tartans 10 victories for the season, marking the first time since 2005 the team recorded double-digit victories.

The Tartans will be idle for the weekend and next travel to New York University for a Friday morning contest at 11:00 a.m. on October 26.
