#21 Tartans Score Four in Road Shutout Win

(WALTHAM, Mass.) - The final touch didn't elude the Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team on Sunday in a 4-0 win against Brandeis University much like it didn't in a scoreless tie at New York on Friday. The #21 Tartans are now 11-1-3 overall and are 4-1-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Judges fall to 12-4-2 and 1-3-2.

Senior Brianna Magill (Oak Brook, Ill./Downers Grove North) put the Tartans ahead 1-0 in the eighth minute when she beat the keeper to the ball and finished after a through ball by junior Alex Venegas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) was put by the defense.

In the 15th minute, junior keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) made her first save of the game off a header attempt by Mathilde Robinson following a free kick.

Freshman Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) made an impact shortly after coming on the field in the 25th minute when she put a cross into the box in the 28th minute that Venegas finished with a shot that beat the keeper just under the crossbar. The goal was Venegas's second of the year and gave the Tartans a two-goal advantage which they held until the break.

In the second period, the Tartans continued to strike offensively as the Brandeis defense made two saves off the goalline before Venegas struck again. In the 67th minute, Venegas put the tartans up 3-0 with a shot inside the left post off an assist from sophomore Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff).

It didn't take long for the Cardinal and Gray to score again as Reid was the beneficiary of perfectly placed corner kick by junior Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley). Reid finished the shot to the upper 90 for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Albi finished the game with two saves, including one where she dove to stop a header when the score was 2-0. With the win, Albi recorded her 11th victory of the year and her sixth shutout of the season.

The Tartans will return home for their final regular season game on Saturday, November 3 in a key matchup with Emory University, ranked first in the nation, at 3:00 p.m.
