No. 4 Tartans Drop First Game of Season Against No. 2 Bears

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The No. 4 Carnegie Mellon University Tartans (9-1, 1-1) women's soccer team lost their first game of the season in a hard fought battle against the No. 2 Washington University of St. Louis Bears (10-0-2, 1-0-1) 0-1 on Saturday afternoon in Univserity Athletic Association (UAA) conference play.

After a quiet first half of play at the net, the Bears had two quick opportunities for a goal in the beginning of the second, but shot by the visitors were wide and high.

In the 58th minute of play, sophomore Megan Bartoshuk (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) sent a hard shot right to the middle of the net, but wasn't able to tally a point as the Bears goalkeeper dove in front of it.

With 28:41 left to play, the Bears made contact with the back of the net after sophomore goalkeeper Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle) pushed a free kick by Lillie Toaspern to the crossbar but saw a second shot soar just over the tips of her fingers when Sam Ezratty followed with a header.

Throughout the remainder of the game there were serveral close shots by freshman Tori Iatarola (West Dundee, Ill./Loyola Academy), which hit the top right corner of the goal post, two from senior Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff), and one each from freshman Sienna Stritter (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo School) and junior Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy).

The Tartans will be back in action on Friday, October 17 in Waltham, Mass., against No. 20 Brandeis University before traveling to New York University on Sunday to finish a weekend of UAA play.
