Tartans Held to Tie in Home Opener Versus Ohio Northern

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team was held to a 0-0 tie against Ohio Northern University on Friday, September 11, in the first game of its DoubleTree Tartan Cup. The seventh-ranked Tartans are now 2-0-1 on the year as the Polar Bears are 2-1-1.

The Tartans registered four shots on goal for the game, all saved by Polar Bear keeper, Emily Brodict. In the first half, sophomore defender Alex Moy (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) sent a shot over the defense that bounced off the crossbar while sophomore keeper Sarah Mahler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Madeira) recorded a save in the opening minutes of the game.

The second half saw each team take three shots before regulation ended with neither team finding the back of the net.

In the first minute of overtime, sophomore midfielder Tori Iatarola (West Dundee, Ill./Loyola Academy) sent a corner kick to the back post. Sophomore defender Keely Jelinek (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) put a header on net but it was stopped by a Polar Bear defender before the Tartans were denied another opportunity as a foul was called.

In the 109th minute, Iatarola saw her own right footed blast hit the post as the Tartans were denied again.

Mahler earned the shutout in net, recording two saves, including one in the final minute.

The Tartans will return to the field on Saturday, September 12 at 1:30 p.m. when they host No. 18 Wheaton (Ill.) College to close out the DoubleTree Tartan Cup.
