No. 7 Tartans Record Fourth Shutout in 1-0 Win Versus No. 18 Wheaton

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Sophomore Tori Iatarola's (West Dundee, Ill./Loyola Academy) goal in the opening minutes of the second half stood up as the seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University Tartans defeated No. 18 Wheaton (Ill.) College 1-0 on Saturday, September 12 in the DoubleTree Tartan Cup. The win improves the Tartans' record to 3-0-1 while the Thunder drop to 3-2.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Mahler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Madeira) earned her second straight shutout and first career win in net for the Tartans, as she stopped two shots for the match.

The Tartans got off nine shots for the game, putting three on frame, including Iatarola's goal in the 47th minute. In the opening minute of the second half, freshman Kaili Bruch (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) ran onto a ball toward the endline in the corner. She played a ball back to a charging Iatarola who picked up the ball after a deflection by a defender. Iatarola took a touch forward toward the goal line, stepped on the ball to pull it back and then fired a right-footed shot to the far post for the goal.

Wheaton pressed in the final minutes but a shot from distance by Sydney Sharkey was right at Mahler who made the save.

The Tartans will continue a seven-game home stand with a 7:00 p.m. match against Grove City College on Friday, September 18.
