(CHICIAGO, Ill.) - Four second half goals propelled the Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory in a key University Athletic Association (UAA) and nationally ranked matchup against the University of Chicago on Sunday, November 1. The victory gives the Tartans a 14-1-1 overall mark and a 5-1 Association mark while the Maroons fall to 12-5, 4-2.
The Tartans, ranked third in the nation, rebounded from a 1-0 double overtime defeat to sixth-ranked Washington University on Friday, by topping 18th-ranked Chicago and remain tied with Washington at the top of the UAA standings with one game to play.
Sophomore Tori Iatarola (West Dundee, Ill./Loyola Academy) scored the game's first goal when she connected on a shot in the 58th minute. Her shot came off a pass from sophomore Katie Strycharz (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) and hit the crossbar before crossing the goal line.
In the 71st minute, senior Alli McGugan (Chicago, Ill./Marist) scored her second goal of the season when she finished a shot inside the box after Chicago had trouble clearing the ball. Eight minutes later, Iatarola served a corner kick in front of the goal where senior Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) put her head on it for the Tartans' 3-0 lead.
The Tartans took a four-goal advantage when freshman Kaily Bruch (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) scored her first career goal in the 81st minute. Bruch received a pass from Quiros and dribbled past the goalie before connecting with the net.
Junior Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle) made three saves in net before giving up a goal in the 89th minute off a rebound following a shot that hit the post. Two of Liston's saves came on back-to-back shots in the 78th minute before Quiros put the Tartans up by three.
The Tartans will close out the regular season at Case Western Reserve University (7-6-4, 0-5-1) on Saturday, November 7 at 5:00 p.m.
