Tartans Dominate Action, Settle for Tie with John Carroll

(UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team tied the game late against John Carroll University, as the match finished in a 1-1 tie on Friday evening in University Height, Ohio. The Tartans are now 5-2-1 on the season while John Carroll moves to 3-3-3.

John Carroll put its first shot on frame and past sophomore Sarah Mahler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Madeira) late in the 14th minute for the 1-0 lead.

The Tartans had four shots on goal in the first period but all were denied by Rhianna Guarnera for the Blue Streaks.

In the second half, the Tartans continued to fire shots off with another four stopped by Guarnera before junior Haili Adams (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita) put in the equalizer in the 84th minute.

Two saves by Guarnera in the final two minutes, both off shots by junior Tori Iatarola (West Dundee, Ill./Loyola Academy), kept the game tied and pushed it to extra time.

Freshman Andrea Sipos (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) entered the game in the 67th minute for Mahler and shut out the Blue Streaks the rest of the way to earn the decision in goal for the Tartans.

Neither team could manage a goal in the extra time as the score remained 1-1.

Carnegie Mellon will next play host to Allegheny College on Sunday, September 25 at 3:00 p.m.
