No. 17 Tartans Conclude Season in First Round of NCAA Tournament

(SPRINGFIELD, Ohio) – The 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team suffered a defeat to Penn State Berks in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday, November 12 by a 3-1 score. The result concludes the season for the Tartans who finish with an 11-6-1 record.

Penn State Berks broke open the scoring in the 10th minute when Kaylie Smucker finished a shot past senior Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle) in goal for the Tartans.

The Tartans put three shots on goal following the tally by Smucker but all were saved by Paige Elmy.

In the 50th minute, the Tartans hit to post with a shot for the second time in the game, this one coming off the head of sophomore Katja Brackelmanns-Puig (Randolph, N.J./Randolph).

Just about seven minutes later, Dana Sarcinello gave Penn State Berks a 2-0 advantage.

In the 66th minute, freshman Ryan Casey (Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic) cut the deficit in half for the Tartans with her fifth goal of the season.

Freshman Sydney Webber (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) had a shot attempt saved in the 79th minute and Penn State Berks sealed the victory in the 89th minute when Scarinello scored for the second time.

The postseason tournament appearance was the fifth straight for the Tartans.
