Early Goal Stands Up in 1-0 Win for #13 Tartans Against NYU

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - An early goal by senior Haili Adams (Kirkland, Wash. / Juanita) propelled the 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against visiting New York University on Saturday, September 30. With the win, the Tartans move to 7-1-1 for the year and 1-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Violets fall to 5-3-1 and 0-1.

Adams put in the game winner and her seventh goal of the year in the third minute. Senior Katie Strycharz (Potomac Falls, Va. / Dominion) played a ball along the sideline to sophomore Ryan Casey (Pasadena, Calif. / Polytechnic) who raced down to the goal line on the dribble and cut a pass back toward the corner of the six-yard box. Adams was there to loft a shot over the keeper to the far post.

In the second half, NYU keeper, Sophia Danielsen, made four saves in the span of two minutes. Senior Tori Iatarola (West Dundee, Ill. / Loyola Academy) put the first shot on goal with 53:47 gone by. A minute later, freshman Kristen Chong (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) had her shot saved and pushed out for a corner kick. Chong then had another shot following the corner kick taken by Iatarola. The fourth save of the sequence came when sophomore Tara Durstewitz (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) fired a shot after another Iatarola corner kick and Danielsen denied the attempt.

The Tartans kept NYU at bay in the later moments of the second half and freshman Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo. / Micds) was credited with the win and shutout after making two saves for the game.

Carnegie Mellon will next host Nazareth College on Tuesday, October 3 at 3:30 p.m.
