(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team hosted Nazareth College in a non-conference match on Tuesday afternoon. The Tartans earned a 2-0 win against the Golden Flyers, bringing their season record to 8-1-1 as Nazareth is now 6-4-1.
Eight minutes into the first half, the first goal of the game was scored by sophomore Ryan Casey (Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic). Taking the ball up the center of the field, she dribbled around the defenders and fired a left-footed shot hitting the back of the net. The goal increased her team-leading season total to eight.
Late in the first half, the Tartans nearly added to the score but two team saves by Nazareth left the score 1-0 at halftime.
Junior Tessa Allen (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Bishop Montgomery) scored the second goal for the Tartans 13 minutes into the second half. Senior Tori Iotarola (West Dundee, Ill./Loyola Academy) earned the assist by sending a corner kick across the box, where Allen finished the play with a header at the back post. The goal was the first of the season for Allen.
Freshman Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo./Micds) made her only save in the 17th minute, earning her sixth shutout for the season.
The women will next play at Brandeis University on October 7 at 1:30pm for the second conference game of the season.
