Late Goal by Adams Lifts #9 Tartans to Victory Against Rochester

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Senior forward Haili Adams (Kirkland, Wash. / Juanita) put in her tenth goal of the season in the 87th minute to lift the ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against the University of Rochester on Sunday, October 29. The Tartans are now 12-2-2 for the year and 4-1-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

The play that led to the game-winning goal was set up in the midfield when Adams fought for a ball and touched it long and outside to senior Grant Wilmer (Atlanta, Ga. / Holy Innocents' Episcopal School). Wilmer dribbled to the corner of the 18-yard box where she pulled up and then passed across the box to Adams who took a touch back to her right with the defense running left. She squared to goal and fired a shot to the upper right corner for her fifth game-winning goal of the season.

The Tartans had a few opportunities to score earlier in the second half but Emma Campbell was in the right position each time to stop the shots for Rochester (7-8-1, 1-5). Two minutes into the half, senior Katie Strycharz (Potomac Falls, Va. / Dominion) was inside the 18 and put a shot on goal but right to Campbell's hands. Then in the 81st minute, sophomore Emery Noll (Matthews, N.C. / David W Butler) took a shot from 20 yards out that she skipped across the ground through traffic but Campbell was right there to scoop up the ball for the save.

In the first half, Nicolette Kober took a shot for the Yellowjackets but it sailed wide right while Jorie Freitag's shot in the 17th minute was a routine save for freshman Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) in net for the Tartans.

Senior Sienna Stritter (Menlo Park, Calif. / Menlo School) fired a shot at Campbell in the 35th minute but Campbell was able to knock it down and then smother it before a Tartan could get to the rebound.

Botz finished with two saves while Campbell made six. Botz improved her record to 12-2-2 and now has nine shutouts for the year.

The Tartans will close the regular season on Saturday, November 4 at Case Western Reserve University at 7:30 p.m.
