(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team hosted a NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship first round game against Farmingdale State University on Saturday, November 11, advancing past the Rams with a 1-0 victory. The win improves the Tartans' record to 14-2-2 and goes down as the fourth NCAA first-round win in program history.
The Tartans scored in the 25th minute when senior Haili Adams (Kirkland, Wash. / Juanita) poked in her 11th goal of the season. Adams finished off a rebound in the box after junior Emily Tolmer (Bridgeville, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) back healed a shot that was saved by a Farmingdale State defender.
Earlier in the period, Adams fired a shot high that was pushed over the bar by Daniella Ford. Ford made a similar save in the 76th minute off a shot by sophomore Sydney Webber (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) that kept the score at 1-0.
The Tartans put nine shots on goal while the Rams forced freshman Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) to make four saves. In the 83rd minute, Botz dove to her left to push a shot wide before punching a shot over the bar in the 85th minute. Botz made her final save in the 86th minute off a header following a corner kick.
The Tartans advance to the second round and will host Arcadia College (16-5) who defeated Franklin College, 3-1, in the first round. The game between the Tartans and Knights will kick off at 7:00 p.m.
