#11 Tartans Tie Washington and Lee in DoubleTree Tartan Cup

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.)- In the final match of the Carnegie Mellon University DoubleTree Tartan Cup, the women's soccer team tied the Washington and Lee University Generals.  The 1-1 score after double overtime kept the Tartans undefeated after the opening weekend for the season. 

Both teams were evenly matched in the first half, with multiple close shots at the net.  The Tartans had four shots in an eleven-minute span.  Junior Ryan Casey (Marina del Rey, Calif. / Polytechnic) had the first shot for the Tartans in the seventh minute but it was denied by the defense.  In the 12th minute, senior Kaily Bruch (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) missed high above the goal.  Washington and Lee's keeper Grace Coombs had two saves a minute apart on shots by Casey and senior Katja Brackelmanns-Puig (Randolph, N.J. / Randolph).  Sophomore keeper Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) had two saves in the first half, keeping the game scoreless at halftime.

Washington & Lee scored the first goal of the game in the 59th minute off a free kick.  After a team save following a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, the Generals' senior Danielle Spickard one-timed the rebound into the far corner for the tally.

Carnegie Mellon continued to pressure in the second half with three more shots between the 73rd minute and the 75th minute.  Freshman Maddie Cech (Cincinnati, Ohio / Indian Hill) shot the ball just wide of the net and a shot by junior Emery Noll (Matthews, N.C. / David W Butler) was saved by the Generals' keeper.  Senior Emily Tolmer (Bridgeville, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) headed the ball just high of the post for the third attempt. 

Junior Sydney Webber (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) tied the score for the Tartans off a penalty kick in the 82nd minute.  After Washington and Lee blocked a shot by Bruch, a hand ball in the box gave Webber the chance for a goal.

The game ended in double overtime with the score remaining 1-1.  Carnegie Mellon team's record moves to 1-0-1 as they hit the road for their next match. The Tartans play University of Lynchburg at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8.
