#10 Tartans Stopped at Home by #5 Messiah

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team hosted fifth-ranked Messiah College on Saturday, September 15, falling to the Falcons, 4-1. The Tartans move to 4-1-1 for the year while Messiah advances to 5-1.

Messiah scored the first goal of the game with a quick play at the top of the box.  Sunny Gelnovatch scored her third goal of the seaon after receiving a pass from Brooke Firestone. Gelnovatch ripped a shot from 25 yards out to the upper 90 of the far post.

The next two goals were penalty kicks scored by both teams. Firestone converted her attempt in the ninth minute after being tripped in the box by CMU keeper Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS). Two minutes later, junior forward Ryan Casey (Marina del Rey, Calif. / Polytechnic) was fouled in the box and junior midfielder Sydney Webber (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) scored the ensuing penalty kick to make the score 2-1.

Messiah added to the scoreline in the 21st minute when Emily Lockwood fired a left footed shot to the left post past Botz.

The final goal of the contest was scored by Maddie Kohl in the 57th minute for Messiah.

Botz made two saves for the game while the Tartans put four shots on goal.
