#21 Tartans Drop Contest to #13 Chicago

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 21st-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team hosted 13th-ranked University of Chicago on Friday, October 12 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest. Chicago rallied from a goal down to top the Tartans, 2-1.

After two quick shots by the Maroons (11-1-1, 3-0-0) were saved by sophomore Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) in the first three minutes, the Tartans offense kicked in and they registered four shots on goal while maintaining possession through the 38th minute.

In the 40th minute, the Tartans (7-4-1, 0-3-0) earned a free kick that sophomore Kristen Chong (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) stepped up to take. The sophomore fired the shot from 25 yards out and center of the field to the upper right corner for her first score of the year.

The Maroons countered in the 41st minute but two stops by the Tartan defense kept the home team ahead 1-0 at halftime.

An unfortunate handball by the Tartans inside the box in the 47th minute led to a penalty kick goal by Mackenzie Peebles. Chicago continued to put pressure on the Tartans with shots on goal in the 54th and 57th minutes.

Freshman Stephanie Ramsay (Lake Forest, Ill. / Loyola Academy) had a shot go just over the goal in the 48th minute and junior Emery Noll (Matthews, N.C. / David W Butler) had a shot stopped by Miranda Malone in the 71st minute.

Chicago scored the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute when Jenna McKinney received a pass in tight quarters from Nicole Kaspi and turned for the shot from the left side to the far post.

Senior Kaily Bruch (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) had an opportunity to tie the game a minute later but Malone denied the shot and earned the win in net for the Maroons.

The Tartans will next host No. 1 Washington University on Sunday, October 14 at 1:30 p.m.
