Tartans Open Year with 5-0 Victory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team opened the 2019 season with a 5-0 victory against Aurora University in the opening game of the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Tartan Cup. Freshman Alex Adams scored twice while sophomore Marissa McAfee recorded a goal and an assist in her first career game.

Sophomore Julianne Tippett score the lone goal of the first half in the second minute of play. The midfielder picked up an errant pass inside the 18-yard box and lofted a right-footed shot over the keeper for the opening score.

The Tartans put another two shots on goal in the first period before breaking through with four goals in the second stanza.

Senior Tara Durstewitz was the second goal scorer for the Tartans when she spun around a defender in the goal mouth in the 64th minute. The goalie got her hands on a pass into the box but it deflected down to Durstewitz who held off the defender before taking the shot.

Moments after entering the game, McAfee flicked in a corner kick by freshman Madeline Blakley in the 84th minute. About four minutes later, McAfee dribbled to the end line left of the goal and put a diagonal pass to the six-yard box where Adams one-timed a shot for her first career marker.

With 20 seconds left to play, Adams scored again when she unleashed a right-footed shot from 25 yards out after finding herself in open space.

In goal for the Tartans, junior Carolyn Botz earned the win after starting and playing the first 45 minutes. Senior Andrea Sipos played the second 45 and forced the Spartans lone shot wide by charging out of the net to cut the angle.

The Tartans next host Ohio Northern University on Sunday, September 1 at 1:30 p.m. in the finale of the DoubleTree Tartan Cup.
