Tartans Tripped Up 1-0 at Home Against Ohio Northern

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team hosted Ohio Northern University on Sunday, September 1 in the final game of the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Tartan Cup. An early second half goal by the visitors stood for a 1-0 final moving the Tartans record to 1-1 and the Polar Bears record to 2-0.

A corner kick by the Tartans in the first two minutes of the game resulted in a shot by sophomore Maddy Lui, but her header hit the right post. A shot by senior Tara Durstewitz in the early seconds on the 13th minute was stopped by Meagan Grierson in goal, keeping the score 0-0.

The only shot of the first half on goal for the Polar Bears came in the 28th minute but was right at junior Carolyn Botz who smothered the shot.

A free kick by freshman Madeline Blakley in the 40th minute was fired on frame but again the shot was denied by Grierson.

In the first minute of the second half, the Polar Bears were awarded a free kick just inside their offensive half. Sydney Leshnak served the ball inside the 18-yard box where Megan Breier flicked it on with her head. Haley Moses then settled it down with her chest and turned with a right-footed shot to the lower left corner for the score.

The Tartans got off seven shots in the second period with four on goal but Ohio Northern was able to hold onto the shutout.

Carnegie Mellon will next travel to Denison University for a 2:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, September 7.
