Tartans Defend Home Turf, Top Illinois Tech 4-0

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team hosted Illinois Institute of Technology in non-conference action on Sunday, September 22, winning 4-0 to move to 5-2-1 for the season.

A scoreless first half witnessed a few shots on frame for each team with a shot by Tartan sophomore Daisy Gollis (Irvine, Calif. / Tarbut V'Torah) hitting the crossbar.

Three minutes into the second half the Tartans earned a corner kick.  Senior Tara Durstewitz (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) fired the free kick across the goal mouth where freshman Alex Adams (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) met it with her head for the game's first tally. The goal was the sixth of the season for Adams.

Less than five minutes later Durstewitz set up another score for the Tartan with a long pass down the sideline. Freshman Helena Spencer (Warrenton, Va. / Patriot) ended up winning a ball that bounced off a defender and raced her down the sideline. Spencer then cut toward the goal and squeezed a shot between the keeper and the post for the two-goal advantage.

Sophomore Maddy Lui (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge) added to the Tartans score line with a goal in the 63rd minute. After a cross to the far post that was deflected out by the defense, Lui ran onto the free ball and placed a shot to the near post.

Another goal was scored by the Tartans in the 71st minute when Gollis finished off a cross from sophomore Maddie Cech (Cincinnati, Ohio / Indian Hill).

Senior Andrea Sipos (Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) made two saves in the first half and played 75 minutes to earn the win in net. Sophomore Skylar Pollock (Parkland, Fla. / Pine Crest) closed out the game without facing a shot to assist in the shutout for the home team.

The Tartans will next travel to Penn State Behrend on Saturday, September 28 for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
