#25 Tartans Top #21 Case Western 3-1 on the Road

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The 25th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team closed the regular season with a 3-1 victory on the road against 21st-ranked Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, November 9. The Tartans are now 11-5-1 for the year and 4-3 in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

Freshman Helena Spencer (Warrenton, Va. / Patriot) gave the Tartans the lead in the 15th minute when she stole the ball off a defender's backward pass and finished into an open net. The goal was Spencer's fourth of the season and came after the Tartans had put five other shots on goal including the opening shot of the game by Spencer that was cleared out by a defender.

A shot by junior Taylor Cammarata (Cary, N.C. / Green Hope) hit the crossbar in the 18th minute before senior Andrea Sipos (Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) made a save for the Tartans in the 32nd minute. The Tartans continued to pepper the Case Western Reserve keeper who made another three saves before the half ended.

Case Western Reserve's defense kept the Tartans away from the goal while the offense forced two saves by Sipos in the 59th and 68th minutes before hitting the crossbar in the 74th minute.

A counter attack by the Tartans following a blocked shot off the rebound from the crossbar, resulted in the second goal of the game for the visitors. Freshman Alex Adams (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) had a breakaway shot stopped by Lauren Unterborn but not secured and she picked up the rebound and finished for the score, her 11th tally of the season.

In the 83rd minute, sophomore Marissa McAfee (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) added to the Tartans lead with her second goal of the season. Her shot came from the middle of the 18-yard box.

The Spartans (13-5, 2-5) did breakup the shutout in the 89th minute when Kimberly Chen scored from inside the 18-yard box after a pass by Jennifer Markley got through the defense.

The Tartans will wait to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament on Monday, November 11.
