#25 Tartans Advance in NCAA Tournament with 1-0 Win Against Swarthmore

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 25th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team won its second round game of the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday, 1-0, against Swarthmore College in front of a filled student section. The Tartans are now 13-5-1 for the year and advance to next weekend's sectional round.

Senior Andrea Sipos (Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) made a diving save in the 17th minute, grabbing the ball out of the air on a left-to-right shot by Brittany Weiderhold following a counter attack by the Garnet. Ten minutes later, the Tartans pounced on an opportunity in the final third when freshman Helena Spencer (Warrenton, Va. / Patriot) won the ball off a defender inside the corner of the 18-yard box and passed it out to sophomore Maddy Lui (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge). Lui then centered a low-driven cross that was settled by freshman Alex Adams (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) and tapped back to sophomore Jocelyn Mayer (New York, N.Y. / The Dalton School). Mayer struck a right-footed shot between the near post and Swarthmore's keeper for the goal, her first of the season.

The Tartans nearly added to the scoreline in the 60th minute but Chantal Reyes stopped a shot by Adams in the low corner to keep the score at 1-0.

Sipos made her final save of the match in the 68th minute off a shot right at her by Lizzy King.

The last opportunity for the Tartans to add to the lead came in the 77th minute when senior Tara Durstewitz (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) put a pass across the box to Adams with the defender deflecting it but Reyes gobbled it up in the corner before it crossed the line.

The Tartans will face 10th-ranked Ohio Northern University in the round of 16 at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, on Friday, November 22 at 4:30 p.m. CT.
