#5 Tartans Open Season with 6-0 Win Against W&J

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team, ranked No. 5 in the nation by United Soccer Coaches, opened the 2021 season with a 6-0 win against Washington and Jefferson College at home on Wednesday, September 1. The first two goals were scored in the first four minutes of the game with junior Alex Adams (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) involved in both plays.

Freshman Alana Frederick (New York, N.Y. / Sacred Heart Greenwich) one-touched a shot to the right post after Adams got around a defender on the left side of the box and slotted a pass across the penalty area for Frederick to easily place it for her first career score with just two minutes and 42 seconds gone by. A minute and 12 seconds later, Adams scored her first of the season after senior Maddy Lui (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge) put a diagonal ball off the goalline in the air to Adams who settled it before scoring with her left foot.

Sophomore Cecelia Dieterich (South Paris, Maine / Oxford) was fouled in the box in the 22nd minute and proceeded to take the penalty shot, slotting it home for her first of the season and second career goal.

Seven minutes after the Tartans led 3-0, another W&J foul led to a free kick just outside the penalty arc. Dieterich touched the ball to sophomore Breana Valentovish (Cranberry Township, Pa. / Seneca Valley) who blasted a shot from the right to the upper left corner for her first career goal.

Dieterich scored her second goal of the game in the 57th minute after collecting a free ball and taking a few touches to allude a defender. Her shot to the right post was unassisted.

Adams added to the tally with less than two minutes to play when she again connected with Lui who chipped a shot on frame that was hit up off the crossbar by the keeper. Adams was right there to collect it and calmly touched it across the goalline for the final goal of the game.

The Tartans will next host La Roche University at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 3.
