Tartans Hold Advantage in Shots but Fall to #25 Emory, 1-0

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The 15th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team once again held the advantage in shots on goal in their fourth University Athletic Association (UAA) game of the season but fell to the 25th-ranked Emory University Eagles, 1-0, at Emory on Sunday afternoon. The Tartans are now 9-3-1 and 2-1-1 in the UAA while the Eagles move to 10-3-1 and 2-2.

The Tartans put two shots on goal in the first 15 minutes with junior Helena Spencer (Warrenton, Va. / Patriot) starting things off in the eighth minute and junior Alex Adams (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) getting off a shot in the early seconds of the 15th minute.

Another shot on goal for the Tartans came off the foot of sophomore Cecelia Dieterich (South Paris, Maine / Oxford) in the 25th minute before a header by Dieterich off a corner kick was high less than a minute later. The sophomore fired off another shot in the 29th minute but it was blocked by an Eagle defender.

The Eagles got off their first shot of the game in the 31st minute but it was high of the frame. 

The winning goal for the Eagles came two minutes later when Kylie Hall finished a left-footed shot at the near post off a diagonal pass back from Brooke Tylka.

Carnegie Mellon freshman Sophia Bastek (Greenwich, Conn. / Greenwich) had a shot go wide in the 41st minute before Emory had another shot high of the goal in the 43rd minute.

The Tartans had their chance to equalize in the 75th minute when a shot by senior Maddy Lui (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge) was blocked and a shot a minute later off the foot of freshman Alana Frederick (New York, N.Y. / Sacred Heart Greenwich) was stopped by Emma Platt in goal for the Eagles.  Platt made another save in the 78th minute off a shot by senior Marissa McAfee (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth).

Graduate student Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) made two saves in the 79th and 80th minutes but the Tartans weren't able to get another shot in the final 10 minutes of action and then game ended 1-0 in favor of the home team.

The Tartans will celebrate their seniors in their next game, Saturday, October 23 at home against Penn State Altoona at 5:00 p.m.
