Askounis Named UAA Freshman of the Year, Three Others Honored on All-UAA Team

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team had four players named to the All-University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Soccer Team by the league's coaches with freshman Maria Askounis (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Marian) earning UAA Freshman of the Year distinction. Askounis also made the first team along with junior Alex Adams (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny).

Junior Nikki Hasson (Torrance, Calif. / California Academy of Mathematics and Science) and sophomore Cecelia Dieterich (South Paris, Maine / Oxford) join Askounis and Adams on the team and were named to the second team.

Askounis scored four of her five regular season goals against UAA competition and recorded the game winner and first career goal against Farmingdale State University in September. The forward had one multi-goal game, which came at home against 12th-ranked University of Chicago.

Adams earned her second All-UAA First Team award with 11 goals scored and three assists for the regular season. One of her goals came in UAA play, as she scored and assisted on a goal against Chicago. The junior forward leads the team with three game-winning goals.

Hasson earns her first all-association award and is a central defender for the Tartans who surrendered just seven goals against during the regular season. Hasson was also a reason opposing teams were only able to take 34 shots on goal. The team now has a .41 goals against average after two postseason games and have tallied 12 shutouts.

Dieterich has started all but one game for the Tartans this year at midfield and is second on the team with eight goals scored. Dieterich also scored and assisted on a goal against Chicago while she recorded two multi-goal games to open the season.

The Tartans were awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships for the eighth time and advanced past the second round for the sixth time. The team continues the season on Saturday, November 20 at eighth-ranked MIT in the sectional semifinal.
