OT Game Goes to MIT in NCAA Sectional Semifinal

(CAMBRIDGE, Mass.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team was held to one shot on goal against the the eighth-ranked MIT Engineers in the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Sectional Semifinal on Saturday, November 20 on the Engineers' home field. The Tartans, ranked 15th nationally, fell 2-1 in overtime after tying the game midway through the second half.

MIT took the lead early in the second period when Mia Sedgwick scored on an unassisted play after a corner kick. The Engineers held a shot advantage of 6-3 in the first period, forcing graduate student Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) to make three saves, before they were able to finish a shot in the 48th minute.

Botz made another two saves in the 64th and 65th minutes before junior Alex Adams (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) took advantage of a defensive miscue by the home team to score on in an open net in the 68th minute.

MIT had two shots at the end of regulation with one going wide and the other hitting the post with 22 seconds to go.

In overtime, Botz made a save in the 94th minute and 95th minute before a foul against the Tartans set the Engineers up with a free kick. Maya Nielan served the opportunity into scoring position for the Engineers and Natalie Barnouw was able to head it in for the winner and her ninth goal of the season.

The Tartans' season ends in the sectional semifinal for the fourth time in program history while the Engineers move on to the sectional final for the first time.
