#8 Tartans Earn 2-2 Tie Against NYU Behind Two Goals by Adams

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team hosted New York University for the first University Athletic Association (UAA) contest of the season, rallying for a 2-2 tie after putting 10 shots on goal. The Tartans are now 6-1-2 for the year, as the Violets improve to 4-0-5.

  • The Violets scored two quick goals in the sixth and seventh minutes to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • Senior Alex Adams cut the deficit to one with a score in the 16th minute. Adams finished a rebound off a shot by freshman Jenna Hallbeck after a free kick outside the box was passed to Hallbeck for the shot.
  • Sophomore Catherine MacNichol nearly tied the game two minutes before halftime but her shot on frame was pushed wide by Tyler Hawkins in net for the Violets.
  • Junior Cecelia Dieterich had a shot saved by Hawkins in the 47th minute and then NYU handled the ball in the box while trying to clear it leading to a penalty kick.
  • Dieterich fired the penalty kick straight on which was stopped by Hawkins.
  • Adams found the net again on a rebound in the 62nd minute after senior Helena Spencer fired a shot that Hawkins dove to save that bounced back to the center of the goal frame for Adams charging the net.
  • NYU had a shot on goal in the 68th minute that was stopped by senior Olivia Brand while Brand stopped another shot in the 88th minute to keep the game tied.
